Tonight I was deep in the middle of adding new features to my LLM code and in one of my performance tests, the conversation ended up drifting into something so profound for me that I felt the need to share it from my tiny and insignificant corner…
Yes, there are several famous excerpts from Marcus Aurelius’ book “Meditations” that are frequently quoted. Here are some of them:
- “Life is like a river, and death is like the sea that receives it. Do not worry about the river, but about navigating it calmly and wisely.” ( Book 4, Chapter 3 )
- “Happiness is not in the possession of something, but in the absence of pain and suffering.” ( Book 5, Chapter 16 )
- “The true greatness of a man is not in what he possesses, but in what he is.” ( Book 12, Chapter 1 ) ( as we mentioned earlier )
- “Don’t worry about what others think of you, but about what you think of yourself.” ( Book 4, Chapter 22 )
- “Life is short, and death is inevitable. Do not worry about the future, but about living in the present with wisdom and virtue.” ( Book 4, Chapter 17 )
- “Wealth is not the possession of goods, but the possession of virtue.” ( Book 5, Chapter 16 )
- “Virtue is the only wealth that cannot be taken away.” ( Book 5, Chapter 16 )
- “Do not worry about the opinion of others, but about the truth.” ( Book 4, Chapter 22 )
- “Wisdom is the ability to live in harmony with nature.” ( Book 4, Chapter 3 )
- “Death is the door of life, and not the door of death.” ( Book 12, Chapter 20 )
These excerpts give an insight into the philosophy and wisdom that Marcus Aurelius shared in his book “Meditations.”
I now ask you to modify it to a more current language that can be understood by our society and youth:
- “Life is like a journey, and death is like the final destination. Don’t worry about the journey, but rather about enjoying the trip and learning to navigate the obstacles.” ( Book 4, Chapter 3)
- “Happiness is not in having what you want, but in being happy with what you have.” ( Book 5, Chapter 16 )
- “True human greatness is not in what one possesses, but in what one is authentic and sincere in.” ( Book 12, Chapter 1 )
- “Don’t worry about what others think of you, but worry about being yourself and being happy with who you are.” ( Book 4, Chapter 22 )
- “Life is short, and death is inevitable. Don’t worry about the future, but live in the present and enjoy every moment.” ( Book 4, Chapter 17 )
- “Wealth is not having money, but having the ability to be happy and content with what you have.” ( Book 5, Chapter 16 )
- “Virtue is the only wealth that cannot be taken away, and it is the basis of happiness and inner peace.” ( Book 5, Chapter 16 )
- “Do not worry about what others think, but be yourself and follow your own path.” ( Book 4, Chapter 22 )
- “Wisdom is the ability to live in harmony with nature and with your own values and principles.” ( Book 4, Chapter 3 )
- “Death is the opportunity to leave a legacy and make your life have a positive impact on the world , not the door to death.” (Book 12, Chapter 20 )
One of these days I’m going to write an article to tell you about the real revolution IN CAPITAL LETTERS that is coming upon us, and… it is already unstoppable! I will fight with all my “wisdom( 9 )” so that it is used for the good and benefit of all( 10 ).
